Cloud Computing

November 22, 2008 by CBO · 1 Comment

No wait, I mean Virtualization … , I mean Grid … well no, I should say Utility … Oh, well, forget it … just find a way to save some money!

If you have been in the information technology (IT) sector for any length of time, you are probably accustomed to two IT industry absolutes: (1) never-ending hype from the hardware/software vendors and service providers; and (2) the solutions you build are generally too expensive and take too long to implement. With this in mind, I have yet to make up my own mind on “cloud computing”. However, I have been a big fan of Application Service Provider (ASP) and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) services, which I believe is the genesis of cloud computing (CC).

Blog Clog

October 22, 2008 by CBO · 1 Comment

Blog clogBlog clog. It’s not a new phenomenon. We’ve seen it before. Web sites that are nothing much but ad-banner after ad-banner. Rows and rows of ad banners. Affiliate banners. No content, just banners. No useful information, not even a cohesiveness of banner-subject-matter. Just a wasted click-thru from a search engine result. Blog Clog » » »

Affiliate Links and the 16GB USB Flash Drive for $31.69

October 21, 2008 by CBO · Leave a Comment

URL16GB PD16 USB Flash Drive for $31.69, and the shipping is free! I found a reference to this on a Squidoo lens titled Fun Flash Drives. I have an 8g flash drive that I paid $30 for, and thought it was an excellent bargain. So this is a bargain x2.

Here’s the link to the flash drive. It’s an affiliate link, but it doesn’t belong to me - it belongs to the person who wrote the lens. I don’t know her. She’s a mother of 4 and calls herself “the homeopath”. Funny thing for a homeopath to make a Squidoo lens on. Affiliate Links » » »

Warm Fuzzy Blogging by a Schizophrenic Programmer

October 20, 2008 by CBO · 1 Comment

Schizophrenic programmerJust had a read on a blog by a programmer named Binny. He’s starting a new tradition and I like it. From now on, when he subscribes to a blog, he is writing to the owner and letting them know.

He thinks, and I agree, that it would be a nice thing to do, and would have possible advantages like networking, a possible new reader, world peace (coming from that warm, fuzzy feeling you’d get by receiving an email like this), and … who knows what else, since he just started doing it.

You could send a link to your own blog, and if it is in the same field, it could lead to backlinks or guest blogging opportunities or just a great friendship.

Here is his template, and he says everyone is welcome to use it. So What’s with the Schizophenia? » » »

Search Me

August 8, 2008 by CBO · Leave a Comment

Searchme.comHOW COOL IS THIS?  There must be about a bazillion little search engines out there, but this one is different! You don’t get a list of text results, or even a list of text results with a small screen shot of the sites. More » » »

Google’s Knol - Share Your Knowledge

July 26, 2008 by CBO · Leave a Comment

Google's KnolGOOGLE HAS STARTED A PROGRAM called Knol - which is short for a Knowledge unit. They say it is Wikipedia-like, in that readers can add or edit content, but my first impression of Knol was that it is Squidoo-like. As on Squidoo, authors write about a subject that they are an authority on (expert for Squidoo) and can include ads - I am assuming in the form of Adsense - and Google will share the revenue with the author.

Google says, “A knol is an authoritative article about a specific topic.” You can write articles about  (nearly) any subject (to see excluded subjects, go to Knol’s Content Policy).  Authors can use HTML and add images and link to related information. You can also collaborate with other authors on your articles. Readers can leave comments and ratings at the end of the articles, just like on a blog.  Readers can also ask questions, or add a review.

The Stress of Living Online

July 14, 2008 by CBO · Leave a Comment

Living On The NetIT’S AN OLD ARTICLE, but still very relevant. On April 6, 2008, the New York Times posted an article called In Web World of 24/7 Stress, Writers Blog Till They Drop.

It tells of the stress - to the point of death, in one case - of blogging.

Blogging can take a toll - but so can programming, designing web sites, administrating a corporate network, running an ecommerce site - the list goes on and on.

If you spend hours upon hours in front of a computer, because of your job, your business, your blog, Twitter, or just because you’re “hooked”, there seems to be a price to pay. Stress Online » » »
