Not so helpful

(9/17/2009)
I've been a network administrator for 10 years and have bought lots of books. Most of them suffer from an excess of information and a shortage of instruction. This title fits well in that category. I'm not sure who the authors were writing for, but it wasn't me (and what, exactly, is the Microsoft Presentation Hosted Desktop Virtualization Team?). I need to know, in as few words as possible, how to make applications accessible on a terminal server and how to configure and install the TS Gateway and TS Web Access. This book may tell me that somewhere, but I don't have time to search and read to find it. This book is no better and no worse than the typical IT book. But someone needs to write something better than the typical IT book.

Good resource for terminal services administrators or evaluators

(8/21/2009)
This book was an excellent resource for learning the new terminal services features in Windows 2008.

I have been running terminal services and citrix for a decade now, but had not kept up with the new features in 2008. This book quickly gave me the information I needed to design an environment for a new project one of our teams wanted to implement.

Despite the name, this is more of a book to be read than strictly a reference like many other resource kits. The 500 pages went quickly and proved very useful.

The best TS Book I have ever read!

(7/6/2009)
This is the best book I ever read on the Terminal Services Topic! And I have read a lot of them.
Well written, very well organized and very informative. You will find this book to be a great resource whether you are a greenhorn in TS or a hardcore. With over 10 years in the field, being Microsoft TS MVP myself I still found a lot interesting in the book. I love the structure of the book, the notes, the comments and the "Direct from the source" explanations! Highly recommended reading!

Well laid out, excellent breadth of information that is very accesable

(3/13/2009)
This book is a very well laid out and pretty comprehensive compile of all the various items needed to plan, scale, configure and manage a Terminal Services infrastructure. Before this book, most of this material was scattered throughout whitepapers, Knowledge Base articles and in the tribal knowledge of people who work with the product. Thanks to this book, its all provided in one place in a very easy to find manner (especially when you take into account that there is a searchable soft copy of the book on the accompanying CD) This book gives people from the neophyte level to seasoned administrators a easy to use resource to understand and reference.

The best Microsoft Resource Kit I've ever read

(1/18/2009)
My memory of reading various Microsoft Resource Kits mostly consists of dry, highly technical and not very accessible content. I mean a Resource Kit isn't something you read, it's something you refer to and look up facts in.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book, it's very accessible, clearly laid out and really covers not only the technical ground but also the business case for each of the additions to TS in Windows Server 2008. Sizing hardware for a terminal server is covered in detail as is the comparison of a 32 bit or 64 bit platforms. Profile management, locking down TS servers and licensing is all covered. New features in TS 2008 are covered in great detail, the Session Broker is explained, TS Gateway and TS Remote Apps are fully taken care of as is Easy Printing.
Interspersed in the regular text are short sections where particular technologies are thoroughly explained by various members of the TS team at Microsoft and they too make interesting reading.

All in all this is a must have book for anyone tasked with running a Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services Server or farm.
